Letztens hatte ich meine Fischermütze, die ich nach Jessicas Anleitung gestrickt hab, auch auf meiner dänischen Seite vorgestellt. Dort wurde innerhalb kürzester Zeit nach einer Übersetzung gefragt und Jessica hat mir tatsächlich die Erlaubnis gegeben, die Anleitung zu übersetzen und meinen dänischen Lesern zur Verfügung zu stellen.
Da Jessica und ihr Blog schoenstricken.de in Dänemark noch nicht ganz so bekannt sind wie in der deutschen Strickscene, haben wir auch kurzerhand ein kleines Frage- und Antwortspiel veranstaltet und Jessica war so nett, alle meine Fragen zu beantworten. Hier könnt ihr das komplette Interview mit Jessica lesen.
Ein dickes Dankeschön noch einmal an Jessica, dass ich ihre Fischermützenanleitung übersetzen durfte und dass sie sich die Zeit genommen hat, uns einen kleinen Einblick in ihr beschäftigtes Wollshop-Besitzer-Leben zu geben.

Seit wann strickst/häkelst du und wie bist du dazu gekommen?
Ich stricke und häkle seit ich 8 bin. Allerdings hatte ich eine ziemlich lange Pause von 9-35. Ich stricke jetzt also bereits seit ca. 6 Jahren wieder.
Es ist eine Sache, mit stricken anzufangen, aber wie bist du dann vom Hobby zum Webshop gekommen?
Ich hatte den Blog schon 1 Jahr und da er recht schnell gewachsen ist, wurde er immer teurer und zeitintensiver in der Betreuung. Je mehr Traffic, desto mehr technischen Aufwand musst du betreiben, der Serverplatz muss größer werden und du brauchst einen Admin (ich zumindest) der die Technik unter Kontrolle hält.
Jedenfalls brauchte ich Geld für die neu entstandenen Kosten und ich hatte die Wahl den Blog mit Werbung zuzuballern, was ich eigentlich nicht wollte oder einen Shop zu eröffnen. Der Shop schien mir die bessere Alternative, und so hab ich angefangen Dinge zu verkaufen, die ich selber toll finde. Nämlich hochwertige Wolle und passendes Zubehör. Ich mag jedes einzelne meiner Produkte gerne und denke der Shop ist ein guter Weg alles finanzieren zu können, damit auch der Blog schoenstricken weiter wachsen kann.
Wenn du zurückblickst: Was war die größte Herausforderung bei der Eröffnung des Webshops/dem sich-selbstständig-machen?
Also selbstständig war ich schon immer – ich bin ja eigentlich Fernsehredakteurin und war immer Freelancer. Beim Shop ist es aber ganz klar die Technik gewesen. Da haben wir extrem lange dran rumfeilen müssen und haben auch so ziemlich jeden Fehler gemacht, den es gab. Das erste Jahr war wirklich hart. Langsam finde ich Wege, wie ich alles ein bisschen einfacher und schneller hinbekommen kann. Aber so richtig schnell läuft das alles immer noch nicht ab, einfach weil wir sehr viele Schritte manuell machen müssen und das kostet richtig viel Zeit.
Wie würdest du das Konzept von schoenstricken.de beschreiben?
Im Blog zeige ich Dinge, die ich toll finde. Im Shop verkaufe ich Wolle, die ich toll finde. Ich bin superglücklich mit schoenstricken, weil das bin einfach ich und mein Geschmack. Zusammen mit meiner Strickexpertin Katrin entwickeln wir auch eigene Strickanleitungen, es macht total viel Spaß zu sehen, dass unser Ideen gut ankommen. Das ist wirklich schön und ich hoffe das bleibt auch so und wird vielleicht noch viel besser.
Wie sieht ein typischer Tag in deinem Strick-Traumjob-Leben aus?
Ähm, nicht so traumhaft wie man denkt glaub ich. Ich stehe um 5 Uhr auf und checke die Bestellungen, drucke Lieferscheine aus und kontrolliere was ich nachbestellen muss. Dann mache ich diese Bestellungen, schreibe emails, beantworte Anfragen, drucke die Anleitungen für die bestellten Strickkits aus.
Dann ist es irgendwann 7 Uhr und ich wecke mein Kind, mache Frühstück. Um 8 Uhr setzen wir uns aufs Fahrrad und es geht in den Kindergarten. Danach fahre ich in mein Büro und dort packe ich die Bestellungen zusammen. Manchmal hab ich Hilfe dabei, oft aber auch nicht. Das mache ich bis um 16 Uhr. Danach fahre ich mein Kind abholen. Abends wenn sie schläft, setze ich mich wieder an den Computer und schreibe den Blog, beantworte Emails und Kundenanfragen.
An die Frage oben anknüpfend: Wie schaffst du es, diesen bestimmt nicht ganz leichten Job mit dem Mama-Dasein zu kombinieren?
Das ist oft superschwer, weil ich eigentlich den ganzen Tag etwas zu tun hätte, aber um 16h muss ich alles unterbrechen und dann komplett umswitchen und Mama sein. Oft erwische ich mich dabei, am Handy emails zu beantworten, während wir zusammen ein Eis essen. Das finde ich absolut schrecklich und ich versuche in der Zeit mit meiner Tochter 100% für sie da zu sein. Ich denke immer, das geht so schnell vorbei und irgendwann will sie gar nicht mehr mit mir Eis essen gehen oder vielleicht überhaupt gesehen werden. Daher will ich die Zeit mit ihr genießen, aber manchmal muss ich einfach arbeiten, auch wenn Leni dabei ist, weil irgendwas Dringendes anliegt oder die Bestellungen sich stapeln. Ab und zu hilft sie auch schon mit beim Versand, das heißt sie klebt das Paketband irgendwo künstlerisch hin und freut sich, wenn sie mit mir ein paar Pakete in die Packstation bringen kann.
Hast du ein spannendes Projekt in Planung, auf das wir uns freuen können?
Ja absolut. Im Sommer kommt eine ziemlich coole Erweiterung meines Sortiments. Jetzt im Frühling wird es ja ein bisschen ruhiger beim Wolleverkauf, und da werde ich mich ganz in oder auf ein neuen, feines Sortiment stürzen. Mit neuen Anleitungen und vielen neuen Wollqualitäten. Ich bin schon total gespannt darauf. Ich hoffe es geht in 1-2 Monaten online. Zur neuen Wolle gibt es dann ein passendes Sommer-Knitalong.
Was inspiriert dich/euch bei schoenstricken.de bzw. wie kommt ihr auf die immer neuen Strickideen?
Meistens sehe ich etwas auf der Straße oder im Netz, das mir gefällt. Und dann versuchen wir das auf unsere Art umzusetzen.
Hast du ein Ziel für wo schoenstricken.de in 5 Jahren sein soll/ was du/ihr erreicht haben möchte(s)t?
Ja, ich würde gerne mal Urlaub machen und dann jemanden haben, der mich vertritt. Das ist manchmal ganz schön viel, wenn alles an einer Person hängt. Katrin hat ja ihren eigenen Laden, in dem sie den ganzen Tag arbeitet. Das heißt schoenstricken steht und fällt mit mir. Ich würde das gerne irgendwann auf mehrere Schultern verteilen. Ich freue mich einfach, wenn in den nächsten Jahren alles weiterhin so gut läuft. Was in den letzten 3 Jahren passiert ist, ist schon unglaublich toll. Ich bin für alles sehr dankbar. Dass wir mal Strick- und Häkelbücher schreiben, ein eigenes Wolllabel haben und so viele Leute lesen, was ich so blogge – hätte glaub ich keiner so recht erwartet.
Gibt es einen Plan oder Traum, irgendwann einen physischen Laden aufzumachen, in dem man bei einem Besuch in Berlin mal vorbeischauen könnte?
Naja, eigentlich ja, aber die Umsetzung dauert wenn dann sicher noch etwas. Wir sind ja noch ziemlich am Anfang und können zur Zeit eigentlich nur von sowas träumen. Aber wer weiß?
Wenn du heute ein einziges Garn auswählen solltest, mit dem du den Rest deines Leben stricken müsstest, welches würdest du wählen?
Oh nein, das wäre ja schrecklich. Dann würde ich auf Nummer Sicher gehen und 100% Merino wählen. Nicht zu dünn, vielleicht für eine 5-6 Nadel. Zu dünne Wolle macht mich oft nervös, weil ich immer schnell voran kommen möchte.
Last but not least: Stell dir vor, du müsstest dir keinerlei Gedanken über Zeit und Geld machen. Welches Strickprojekt würdest du gerne anfangen?
Dann würde ich eine Strickjacke stricken, die ich eigentlich schon seit 2 Jahren machen möchte, aus ultrafeinem Mohair-Seide Garn. Mit dickeren Nadeln gestrickt. Total schick.

A while ago I presented my fishermen’s hat to my Danish readers on my other Danish blog. Not long after posting it someone asked for a translation of the pattern. Jessica gave me the permission to translate her hat pattern into Danish and as her blog is not quite as known yet in Denmark as in the German knitting scene, I asked her a couple of questions to give my Danish readers an idea of who she is and what her blog schoenstricken.de represent.

Since when do you knit/crochet?
I knit and crochet since I was 8 years old. I took, however, a pretty long break from the age of 9-35. Now I’ve been knitting and crocheting again for approx. 6 years.
It’s one thing to get into knitting, but how did you go from turning your hobby into your job and opening a webshop?
I had the blog for about a year and as it was growing pretty quickly, it got more and more expensive as well, a lot of time was needed to administer it. The more traffic, the more effort you have got to put into it, you need more server space and you need an administrator (at least I did) who got all the technical aspects under control. I needed to improve my finances to cover all those new costs and could choose between putting a lot of advertising up on the blog, which I was not especially keen on, and to open a web shop. The shop seemed the better alternative and therefore I started selling things that I myself really liked, such as good quality yarn as well as the matching accessories. I love every single one of my products and I think the shop was a good way to finance the blog so it can continue to grow.
When looking back, what was the biggest challenge when opening the web shop/becoming self-employed?
I have always been self-employed as I am actually a TV editor and have always worked as a freelancer. In regards to the shop the biggest challenge were all the technical aspects, without a doubt. We have worked on that for a very long time and made about every mistake you could possibly make. The first year was pretty tough. Bit by bit I figure out ways to do things easier and faster. However, it’s still a pretty slow process as we have a lot of manual steps to take care of, which take a lot of time.
How would you describe the concept of schoenstricken.de?
On the blog I show things that I like. In the shop I sell yarn that I like. I am extremely happy with schoenstricken.de, because it is 100% me and the things I like. Together with knitting expert Katrin we also develop our own knitting patterns and it is so much fun to see that people like our ideas. That is very satisfying and I hope it will stay that way, or get even better.
What does a typical day look like in your knitting-dream-job kind of life?
Well, actually not as dream-like as you should think. I get up at 5 am and check the orders, print order sheets and check whether there’s anything I need to re-order. After that I place the necessary orders, write emails, answer customer inquiries and print patterns for the knitting kits that customers have ordered.
At around 7 am I wake up my daughter, prepare breakfast and at around 8 am we’ll bike to kindergarden. I then bike on to my office and pack the orders. Sometimes I get some help with that, but most often it’s just myself. I’ll continue with that until 4 pm when I have to go and fetch my daughter again. After she has gone to sleep in the evening I’ll work on the blog, answer emails and customer inquiries again.
So how do you manage to combine your pretty hard job with that of being a mum?
That can be quite a challenge at times, as I have enough to do to work around the clock. But at 4 pm I’ve got to drop everything I’m doing and switch over to being a mum. Sometimes I catch myself answering emails on my phone while we’re eating an ice cream together. That is absolutely horrible and I try to be present 100% when I’m together with my daughter. I sometimes think that this time will pass so quickly and at one point she won’t want eat ice cream with me anymore and maybe not even be seen in public with me anymore. So I really want to enjoy the time with her, but sometimes I just have to work even when I’m with my daughter, because there’s something urgent that needs to be done or the orders are piling up. Sometimes she gives me a hand with the shipping of the packages, i. e. she sticks tape somewhere on the packages in a creative way and is happy when she can go and accompany me while bringing the packages to the post office.
Do you have anything exciting planned that we can look forward to?
Absolutely. In summer I’ll increase my product line. Now in spring it will get a little more quiet in regards to the yarn sale and I’ll focus on the new and exciting product line. There’ll be new patterns in many different yarn qualities. I’m very excited. Hopefully I’ll be able to put them online in about a month or two. In combination with the new yarn there’ll also be a new knit along.
Where do you get your inspiration for all your new ideas?
Most often I see something in the street or on the internet that I like. We then try to change it and make it our own style.
Do you have a goal of where you would like schoenstricken.de to be in 5 years?
Yes, I would absolutely love to go on holiday one day and to have someone who could be my representative. It’s sometimes quite tough when everything is dependent on one single person. Katrin has her own store where she works all day. That means schoenstricken.de is completely dependent on me and I’d love to have someone sometime to share the workload with. For now, I’m just happy if everything continues in the way it has. It’s quite incredible how much we have achieved during the last three years. I’m very grateful for that! I don’t think anyone had expected that so many people would read our blog, that we would publish knitting and crocheting books and have our own yarn label!
Do you have a plan or a dream of opening your own brick-and-mortar store, which we could come visit at one point on a trip to Berlin?
Yes, but that will be taking quite a while. We are just in the beginning of this adventure and can only dream of a physical store right now. But who knows?
If you had to choose one kind of yarn that you would have to knit with for the rest of your life, which one would you go for?
Gosh, that would be horrible. But if I had to choose one I’d be on the safe side and choose 100% merino wool. Not too thin though, maybe for US needle size 8-10. I can get a bit jittery when knitting with very thin wool as I like to progress quickly.
Last but not least: Imagine you did not have to take time or money into the equation: Which knitting project would you like to start?
I would knit a cardigan, which I have actually wanted to do for two years now. I would knit it in very fine mohair-silk yarn, with chunky needles – very chique!
